Waterloo Bylaw Regulations
Waterloo, unfortunately, does not currently allow backyard hens. After a successful pilot program, city council still turned down the request to allow for backyard hens in the City. Those who had hens under the pilot program, however, where allowed to keep them. See the relevant excerpt from the City of Waterloo website below.
Fowl (including chicken)
- Fowl is prohibited unless it is on land that is zoned for agricultural purposes or for residential uses provided the fowl was being kept on the land in question at the date of the enactment of this by-law - April 27, 2009 - and registered with the city
- The number of chickens owned at the date of the enactment of this by-law may be maintained, meaning chickens can be replaced up to that number
- The permission to continue to raise chickens is site specific - this means that chickens cannot be relocated to a new property if the owner moves
Fowl restrictions are in schedule C of the by-law.
